New Scientist, Emotions in Gaming

New Scientist’s David Cohen interviewed Molyneux (at Enterprising Games Week, I assume) about emotions in gaming and how that’s going to go in Fable 2. Via LH, New Scientist blogs.

Transcript’s here, with some very quotable parts.

Enter the Pixel

Some of that awesome Fable 2 art is going to be exhibited! Into the Pixel is some game art exhibition deal and Mike McCarthy, one of Lionhead’s artists, did some art for Fable 2 that got into that, but unfortunately the gallery is not yet online looks like it’s online now!, but it’ll be shown at E3 and E for All. Here’s the news release in which Mike is somewhat unflatteringly stuck in the middle of that big list.
fable-2 Art

The video game industry’s annual Into the Pixel art exhibition today announced 16 works of art that have been selected for its 2007 Collection. Now in its fourth year, Into the Pixel (ITP) is the world’s only juried art exhibition that brings together experts from the traditional fine art world with interactive entertainment industry veterans to explore the art of the video game. The 2007 ITP Collection was announced at a special Jury Panel Event at Creative Arts Agency in their new Los Angeles headquarters.

Molyneux at GCDC

The GC Ddevelopers Conference is set in Leipzig from the 20th to 22nd of August. From the announcement:

Along with the keynote from Eggebrecht, Lionhead’s Peter Molyneux will be in attendance providing a retrospective of his studio’s games.

Original news.

E3 Lineup Leak

An E3 floor manager supposedly had a chat with somebody, told them a whole bunch of stuff and it made its way onto the wii360 forums. Quite a lot of info there which, if true, means Lionhead will be at E3! (We totally posted that rumour a month ago.) This is all pretty much sourceless and unverifiable, hurray. Update ~ Xboxic say that a MS insider said it’s not true, but even he considers Lionhead showing off Fable 2 an obvious guess.

Xbox 360 and Microsoft Rumours for E3′07:

  • Microsoft start first at 6.30pm GMT+0:00. (Fact)
  • New Crimson Skies game to be announced.
  • Bungie working on new title/series not related to anything in the Halo/Marathon Universe.
  • Epic Games to show some gorm of Gears of War 2 Trailer.
  • Microsoft have bought the Star Wars Battlefront 3 rights. Trailer/Demo to be shown.
  • Rare to show off Banjo Kazooie 3 (Banjo-Theerie).
  • Rare to announce 2 new games.
  • Rare to announce Kameo 2.
  • Lionhead Studios show more of Fable 2.
  • Microsoft to fund a new game based on Jason Bourne. It’ll be based on the books and not the film with Matt Damon.
  • Team Ninja to show off Ninja Gaiden 2. Labeled 360 Exclusive.
  • Apparently there’s news of a MGS Game for the 360. May or may not be the 4th Installment.
  • Dead Rising 2 to be shown. May not be ready.

From an E3 Floor Manager supposedly.

F2 Soundtrack Mashups

Xbox.com are doing a competition challenging people to make music merged with that from an Xbox game, and there’s a few Fable 2 trailer-based tracks too. You can vote for them things. Thanks Stomp.

Fable 10th Most Influential RPG

Actiontrip made some sort of list about influential games and Fable clocks in at #10 (but doesn’t mention how it influenced anything). Via Project Ego.

10. Fable

Peter Molyneux Fable (Xbox) was one of those games successfully combining good design with a neatly packed gameplay. Although it never really lived up to its hype, the game was a major financial success. Above all, it made an even greater impact when it arrived on the PC market, with more than an adequate adaptation, entitled Fable: The Lost Chapters. Fable didn’t exactly revolutionize the modern-day RPG, but it sure as hell offered a fine example of fantasy flavored story-telling. It reminds us that even the simplest formula can provide decent entertainment.

Heroes Titled

The votes are in, the competition’s closed.

The second phase of the Fable 2 Hero Title competition has finished, you have voted for the titles you think were worth including and the Fable 2 Design team had a final look at the results! We are now able to confirm which title made it into the game;

Work Exp back open

Lionhead are once more accepting applications to go testing there (they were recently not accepting any). Places are booked a long time in advance, quite easily half a year. Testing at Lionhead involves

  1. To find bugs (problems in the workings of the game that prevent the player from experiencing the game as it is intended).
  2. To give feedback on the quality of the gameplay experience.
The opinions of Work Experience Testers are important to us as you will be encountering the game – as it stands - for the very first time.
At some point during your stint at Lionhead Studios you will also be shown around our development studios, meet Development Team members and get given a good, in-depth understanding of how we develop our games. If you are interested in any development role in particular, be it Programming, Design, Art, Animation, Sound or Testing, to name but a few, we’ll do our utmost to arrange for you to sit with a friendly member of the team and experience exactly what they do, firsthand.

Which games will I get to test?
Any of our games currently at a testable stage of development! Top-secret projects you may have heard of and a handful of top secret projects you won’t have as well as the chance to look at our illustrious back-catalogue!

Fable 2 definitely seems to be at the testable stage and the top secret projects you won’t have heard of are probably prototypes from the CTG - but whether the Secret Game is at all playable is another matter. Says GarageFlower about the time he went:

Race for Life

Three ladies from Lionhead raced for charity in the 5k race for cancer on Sunday and raised lots of dosh. It’s worth donating, Microsoft will double everything they get (heh, easy way to bankrupt them). Louise is Louise Copley, producer on Fable 2. From LH: Race4Life \o/

Three ladies who work here at Lionhead Studios (Louise, Debbie and Jen) participated in a charity run, namely the 5k Race for Life. It took them 29 minutes (there was even a sprint finish) and so far they have raised 1055.05 pounds. Microsoft has agreed to double anything they’ve raised.

None of the three had ever run before but were determined to run the whole way and they even managed a sprint finish! Congratulations to the three Fable Girls!
